piano with no name
Hi everyone, first time post for me,
i have an upright piano wich seems to have no manufacturers name on it.
On the lid it it has "The academy of pianoforte works" Dresden Saxony in a gold leaf inlay and the date 1858. it also has the initials E.K. next to the date.
the serial number 20518.
any help on finding the make and any other information would be much appreciated.
i`ve done a few searches on the net to avail.
thanks gunther91.

It's a strange name, is "works" separate from the rest? It could be Kaps, but if you're searching on the net, it's worth remembering that he only has one P. It could be someone or something else entirely. Numbers are no help unless we know whose they are: If it was Kaps, it would suggest 1897, but their numbers are sometimes misleading. As for 1858, pianos are hardly ever marked simply with the year of manufacture, it's probably either the year they were established, (Kaps was 1858) or some exhibition medal date. Your best hope is that the action might have the action makers' name and number on the rear.
