Care and repair of a lacquered finish?

Post by IvorYtickler »

I've been told that my piano has a lacquer finish, and thre are many, many scratches on it and it is generally a bit dull looking. What cna I do to polish it up, and is it possible for me to polish out or otherwise repair some of the scratches? In a few places they are quite deep, with the colour of the wood showing through- are these likely repairable?
Thanks :)

What do mean by lacquer finish is it high gloss there are Cory products for all Finishings see theSee Compatibility Chart

You probably need Cory Buff-Brite to remove the scratches and Cory High Gloss Piano Polishto clean

also the Steinway Piano Supreme Cream Polish will remove some scratch marks

T-cut, Brasso and a lot of hard rubbing. Otherwise just enjoy playing the piano. I can't see the scratches on mine, under the piles of books.....

actually, it must be fairly easy to repair, because you get all these 40 year old Yamaha U1's for sale and they all have immaculate cases but shoddy insides.

Not sure if it is 'high gloss'... perhaps once upon a time it was! I'm just going by what my tuner said.

A French Polisher will be able to make a good repair.

"Lacquer" can mean several different finishes.

It usually refers to Nitrocellulose lacquer (also referred to as pre-cat lacquer).

It can also be used for Shellac, acrylic or other. All of these systems are different and not compatible with each other.
