Welmar date of manufacture

Post by moley »

I have inherited a Welmar upright from my father. It has the infamous 'disclaimer' ivory plaque inside the frame referred to by 'piano guy' in a post on this forum from 2005. The serial number on the wooden frame is 19551. I had always inderstood that the piano was bought new by my father in 1947 in Sheffield. Is there any way of dating the manufacture? Was this piano made in London? Could it have been made pre-war ie in the 1930s and stored for sale new after the war? This is a lovely instrument, in good condition and playing with a warm tone and an easy action. It has been well maintained and is played and tuned regularly. Is there a market for pianos of this vintage? Any comments and advice will be most welcome. Many thanks.

I'll look for the numbers, but in the meantime, have a look at my Datemarks page at http://www.pianogen.org

The number suggests that it was made in 1934, but the datemarks are sometimes more reliable.

Thanks Bill for your advice - I think you are right and the piano is older than I thought. I have visited your website which is most interesting. I will look more carefully for another indication of the date of manufacture using the tips on your Datemark page. Thanks again.
