Help dating a piano with a Schwander action
Post by ShacharWeis »
Hello everyone.
There is an old piano in our family, the outside (box, wood, not sure how to call it) was made in Israel (Daniel)
The action is marked Schwander. I looked for a serial number, I found this imprinted on the metal near the bottom of the piano:
BS 1452 614. Is that the serial ? Any way to know the age/quality/estimated price ? Thanks !
Shachar Weis.

I suppose the short, rude answer would be "No!" because Schwander actions have been made since the mid-1800s. The part which is not made by Schwander is a called a "piano", and we have no way of guessing whose piano it is, or what date, and valuation depends on testing by a tuner on the spot. Old Schwander actions usually have a number of their own which I may be able to date if you can find it. BS suggests a modern British Standard, and is not a serial number. Have a look at my Datemarks page at www.pianogen.org

You are quite right Bill, BS1452 was a British Standard specification for the manufacture of cast iron. You will see it stamped on lots of castings if you look carefully.
"Daniel" sounds like a stencilled brand.
