A.Bord Piano question
Post by fspreadborough »
Hi
I know you don't give valuations on pianos without seeing them but I have a bit of a tricky problem that i was hoping someone might be able to roughly advise me on.
I live in Portugal on the Silver Coast, not near any big towns only small villages.
A Portuguese friend of mine inherited his granddads piano and has no use for it so wants to now sell it. He has been told by some one locally that it worth 4,000 euros. I asked a friend of mine over the phone who's based in the UK about it and they said it was more lightly to be worth a few hundred pounds and not thousands. It's an A.Bord piano pre 1920's because it has the candle sconces and it's got ivory keys in perfect condition. Could someone just say a rough price guide because my friend has much conflicting information and no real way of getting someone round to gt a true valuation.
It would be really appreciated.

Re: A.Bord Piano question
I'm certainly no expert, but suggest you do a search on this forum using 'Bord'. Having just done that and reading between the lines, I'm sure that your friend is UK is far nearer the mark quoting hundreds, instead of thousands.
Even at a round hundred this could well turn out to be a liability rather than an asset, especially as in your location, access to a good tuner/technician may be difficult.
Comments from the experts?

I was playing the piano in a zoo, when the elephant burst into tears. I said, "Don't you recognize the tune?" He replied, "No, I recognize the ivories!"

It could be as old as 1880s...but old pianos have no antique value. Your UK friend is right, a couple of hundred at most, but that's dependent on its condition. Can you get a tech out to look at it? It's impossible to give a valuation without seeing it in the flesh. Bord made good solid pianos, but an awful lot depends on how it's been treated during what may have been a very long life!
I play for my own amazement...
Re: A.Bord Piano question
old Bords, unless with a highly decorative case are worth nothing
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.
Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it
