Re: what is baby grand piano??
Post by Bill Kibby »
When square pianos died out in the 1880s, there was suddenly a demand for much smaller grands to fill a hole in the market, and some were described as "Baby Grands" even if they were as long as 5'10". Nowadays, we tend to simplify the many terms that have been used in the past and say that...
Baby grands are under 5'
Boudoir grands are about 5' to 7'
Concert grands are over 7'
It was not always that simple or concise, different makers used many different terms. The important thing to understand about a baby grand is that by the time you squeeze the keys and action in, there is very little space for the strings and soundboard, which are often smaller and less effective than the old square pianos. Those only died out because makers lost touch with what the public wanted: the neat, sweet, petite squares of two centuries ago have never lost their appeal.
