I am an experienced pianist looking to buy a new piano. Thomann pianos are cheap and look great but has anyone ever had one before and if so what is your opinion on them?

I am living in ireland and thinking of purchasing a Schimmel 116 piano. Now let me say the local Schimmel dealer is as far as I know a decent honourable person and has been very helpful to this prospective customer. But on checking the price on the web I see that Thomann sell the same piano for approx 60% of the price our local dealer requests. Now i asked why the mark up and have also checked with Schimmel myself and it seems all is not what it seems. Thomann has not authority to sell Schimmel pianos and the seriel no. is not always visible. this is acdcording to the dealre and also Schimmel customer service. So alarm bells sound and I am nervous and anxious what course to take. I would like to know are there any other members of this forum out there who have had a piano delivered from Thomann and what was the service like etc. would be grateful for some attention and replies.

They can do it that cheap as they are using your local dealer as a free showroom.

Remember you do risk it you are covered by distance selling regulations ( in the Uk anyway) so if you dont like it when it turns up send it back, I think within 14 days. Ask how they deal with guarantee problems long distance.

Will they PX it when you need to upgrade in a few years time.

I remember reading somewhere that Thomann had purchased a lot of instruments following a repossession/liquidation sale and that this may be why they have a range of instruments at seemingly low prices.

Wary of bargain hunting I would be extremely cautious of purchasing a piano from an internet retailer, sight unseen.

I would like to thank all that replied to this post and you have confirmed my initial opinion and that was to be cautious and be careful. There is this other second hand piano for sale and I am thinking of going to see it over the coming few days manufactured by Peter Steick (perhaps spelling is not fully correct) so will make my mind up after that, Would dearly like to thank the members of the forum for their advice and help and as they have rightly pointed out if the piano arrives untuned etc I have a problem which would not arise with a local dealer.
