Spencer piano
Hi. Thank you for your helpful and informative site. I have the opportunity of getting a Spencer piano which has been in the family for some years, but I notice the site says older pianos are sometimes impossible to tune. I would want this to be usable without spending a fortune on it - the tone seems fine and all the notes work, but hasn't been tuned for probably 15 years. The number inside the lid is 28472; it just says Spencer inside the lid. Do you know what sort of age this is? I realise it's impossible to say for sure, but is it likely to be tunable?
Many thanks.
Many thanks.

I do not say that old pianos are impossible to tune, I say they can be, and only a tuner, there on the spot, can tell you whether this is the case or not: This applies as much to 50-year old pianos as antiques. The number suggests 1895.
