PAINT

Post by MA. CECILIA M. DE MESA »

good day to everyone, my aunt's piano was seldom used and was overhauled a few days ago... since the piano was against the wall i am not aware that the painter painted the soundboard with a white enamel years ago together with the body....(just saw it when the piano was pulled). does it affect or damage the sounding board and the piano sound in general?

is it matt , gloss or satin finish white? also, you may find that some of the 'hint of' white shades such as 'apple white' can give unpleasant overtones when playing in certain keys.....

Hey Ma, great to hear from you again :D Have you been in SC again?

Anyway, I am a bit concerned when you say that the soundboard has been painted over. Did they cover up the special code symbol (usually found in the bottom right-hand side, just above the sweet wrappers) when they painted it? If so, you will have a real problem when the Cyber-Droids return, as only those who can show the code will be saved.

Be safe, don't be sorry. 8) Get some paint stripper onto your piano immediately. Ask the wardens for some.

Surely not enamel?

Some restorers use a white tinted varnish which just allows the woodgrain to show through. It gives the impression of a new soundboard, rather like the bleaching process favoured by many Polish workshops. Varnish shouldn't have too much of a detrimental effect on the sound, although some UK restorers have certainly criticised the bleaching process.
