date for Broadwood piano

Post by genaa »

Can you shed any light on the date of a Broadwood piano?

The serial number is 16491, it is a Rosewood veneered grand at The Vyne , National Trust house. They allow visitors to play this piano and I had the pleasure today - it is supposed to be around 1846 but would love to check as it is by far the oldest piano I have every played - it had wooden pedals!

Great sound but I would love to know more about this instrument!

Many thanks,

1846 is about right for that number, they persisted with those wooden pedals for many years, indeed many London makers were still using wooden pedals in 1910!

cheers Bill :)

very strange sensation to play as they are like flat paddles - the damper pedal squeaked notoriously as well!
