Henry Farmer of Nottingham

Post by jzed »

I bought a piano from someone via an advertisement in North Yorkshire about 6 years ago, but I wasn't really sure what I was doing at the time, so I didn't ask all the questions I should have at the time. There is a plaque on the front of the piano that has "Henry Farmer / Nottingham" engraved on it. The only number I can find is 533B on the bottom of the soundboard. It also has the phrase "Made in England" above the number. Both the number and phrase are on a large pieces of iron(?) or some other metal attached to the soundboard. I had someone tune it when I lived in England (I now live in the US), and she estimated it was from around 1905. I am looking for some help in trying to more accurately date it and figure out if it is worth restoring. I do not know a lot about pianos, so I apologize if anything in this post is grossly wrong.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Our earliest list of Nottingham firms so far is 1886, and Henry Farmer was already in business then. He continued at least until the 1939 war, so the name doesn't tell us when the piano was made. Have a look at the Datemarks page at www,PianoGen.org or email me some photos. You need it looked over by a technician on the spot.

OK- I shall take and e-mail some pictures. I also forgot to mention- I am also trying to figure out WHO actually made the piano. I do not see anywhere somewhat obvious any other names.

Thanks
