Used Yamaha U1 or Kawai K3

Post by Liz »

Please help I am totally confused. Have read lots on internet about both pianos but am still unsure what to buy my 10 yr old who after 2 years on an electronic keyboard now needs a real piano.

I'm in France and the new Kawai K3 is about 1000 euros more than a used Yam. Is it worth it or should I take a risk on a used yamaha U1. Or should I wait and try to negotiate a good price on a new yamaha B3 coming out in a few weeks.

Thanks.

Depends a lot on the age and condition of the U1 really. I think most folks here recommened getting something upwards of the 5 million serial number mark. If the U1 is young enough and in good condition, and the price favourable, it is certainly a better quality instrument than the B1 and the K3 as well. I think the K5 is about the equivalent of the U1 with K6 about the same as the U3/U5.

Have a technician inspect the U1 if you are seriously considering it.

Happy shopping!

Exactly that!

The b3 is too new a model to compare as yet, but first impressions are favourable. Yamaha have introduced it as a counter-attack to all the s/h U1s out there, and it'll be bound to be better than a tired one, but no match for a top condition 4-5 million. It's priced exactly to beat the s/h ones at 3.3k or so.

Thanks for your help.

I'll go to the Yamaha second hand dealer this weekend and scrutinise those serial numbers. I expect they're the same for french imports as english ones.
