Begg & Co. / Steinmayer

Post by kikiyiu »

I have a Jteinmay upright piano, serial number is 6386. I am not sure the spelling of the name since its very unclear on the piano and I only know the manufacture is Chas. Begg & Co. Kindly please tell me the age and related history of this piano. thank you !

Charles Begg & Co. were dealers in New Zealand a century ago, is that where you are, or is this a different Begg? I can only guess that the piano name is Steinway or Steinmayer? We can't tell you anything at all without knowing more.

I'm sorry, numbers are no use without a proper name, and Begg is not the maker. Also, you need to check your spelling very carefully if you ever want to find anything on the internet. "Dundein" is probably Dunedin. The tuner's details do not help. Can you email some photos to me?

No, that's why I asked you to email the photos to me, but you should have received my reply, which says that you didn't send me a picture of the piano, only parts of it. The name is definitely Steinmayer, two letters are missing. These were originally German, but the Steinmayer name was later available as a cheap name transfer, so it could be placed on any piano if the original name transfer was lost during repolishing.
