Yamaha MP1 - Any good???

Hi folks

Has anyone heard of a Yamaha MP1 upright?

I was originally seeking a circa 1985 U3 or new B1 silent, but have heard theres a MP1 silent at £1400 available and wondered if it was a good buy?

MP1 is old terminology for the U1Silent.

It should be fine, but check which territory it was destined for. It may be an import and operate on a different voltage to our 220/240V 50Hz.

only get it if its UK model but at that price, it might be quite old. The U1 is a better piano (depending on the treatment its had) than the B1. The U3 is a great instrument but its very loud in a small room, so think where its going to go. You might be better off spending the money on a good UX1 which I prefere to a U3, but hey, its personal choice at the end of the day. You can always have a silent system fitted at a later stage if you really want a silent system, at least it would be new and not over 10 years old.

A retro-fit silent system is never as good as a factory fit.

The new yamaha system is good but a new retro system will be a lot better than an old factory system. The Piano disk or Gabor systems are OK with the lastest improvements. But the good thing about a retro system is that you just need a new stop bar and the system can be fitted to another piano. The stop bar is cut to fit the action so the chances of the bar fitting another piano are slim.

i read on a few sites that the u1is really difficult to resell. do you think thats the case with this silent version 2??

The U1 is the World's most popular and respected piano.

The only problem with them these days is that the world and his dog are buying them cheap and flogging them from trading estate units, their garages or eBay. Some masquerade as private sellers.

If you buy one from a good piano dealer with good backup and a warranty it'll sell on better (even if it's an import) than if it's an untraceable no-fixed-abode one bought from some twunt who is flogging them on to make a fast buck. It doesn't take much nous to seek out who's in which category.

At the price you are thinking of paying if it's not a genuine private sale, it'll likely be being offered by a moonlighter. It's either a bargain because the vendor doesn't quite know what he's selling or he does and it's very very tired. Get a decent local tuner to check it over for you before you part with the cash.

The Silent version is a bit more obscure and is worth no more second hand than a standard U1. It shouldn't be worth less though.
