Bluthner question

Post by Openwood »

Is it too much of a generalisation to say that a Bluthner from the Communist era is likely to have the name on the fallboard in plain font capital letters and pre & post communist ones will have the fancy lettering?

A friend is interested in a Bluthner grand. I've told her to get the serial number but she isn't a pianist and can't find it - she lives miles away so I can't go and look myself. I wondered if this was a useful rule of thumb? This piano has the name in capitals.

No.

Either can have either, although the latest post-Commie Blüthners tend to have the fancy script, sometimes with an arty grand piano silhouette shadowing it. Very early models have a script with extra little barbs halfway up each letter.

To identify a Red in the Bed, check the decal on the soundboard. Pinkos will have "VEB-Blüthner Pianofabrik" or something similar. It's the "VEB" but you're looking for.

If you see those three little letters avoid, or pay peanuts.

Thanks PG. I will get her to check for the VEB.
