1963 Yamaha U1
Hello Everyone
I have read all the info on the valuation of pianos and totally appreciate that it depends on a lot of factors, BUT.....
Would anyone be able to give me a rough idea of how much my U1 is worth, lets say assuming average everything?
I am pretty sure that it is a 1963 model based upon what I have found - the serial number is 267482 and inside it says No. U1 Nippon Gakki S.K.K.
It seems to be a fairly unusual U1 in colour and design (not sure if thats a good thing or not) - its a kind of chocolate brown and has the Yamaha logo at the top right of the top door and above the keyboard at the bass end (see pics). I've not seen a U1 like this before (not that I'm an expert or anything) and can't seem to find any pictures on the net of one like it.
Based upon my limited knowledge its in very good condition, I've had it a couple of years and the person I bought it from had just had it "fully serviced" whatever that means! It certainly sounds great.
Any help, info or advice offered would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark.

as long as it plays well, and sounds nice, should be a nice piano.
Lets say, if its all in good order, £1500 ish. In a shop , pay around £2000 but you don't get the service, delivery etc.

The official company name for Yamaha was Yamaha Organ Manufacturing Works from 1888 until 1897 and Nippon Gakki Co, Ltd (roughly translates as "Japan Instrument Manufactung Co, Ltd") from 1897 until 1987, when it changed to Yamaha Corporation.bigears wrote:According to my piano atlas Nippon Gakki Co Ltd Hamamatsu city, Japan. comes under the name of Yamaha, and the serial number you give says it was built in 1978.

That is the correct age. According to a Yamaha website, pianos made in 1963 run from 23xxxx to 29xxxx.sussexpianos wrote:no, its def. 1963, I checked with my mate Pierce.

serial number
Well I am confused by all this. My piano atlas says 256**** is 1978 and your Yamaha web site says 267**** is 1978. It says 1963 is 23*****.
If the gentleman in question who owns the Yamaha was a customer of mine, I would be telling him his piano was made in 1978.

bigears,
you are looking at the 7 place number but it is the 6 place numbers you need to look at.
267482 is 6 places
2674820 is 7 places

It's pretty much a good thing.TwinTurbo wrote:Interesting - is that a good thing or a bad thing? Is there any way I can find out whether thats the case or not?PianoGuy wrote: Looking at the state of the hammers it's one of the factory rebuilt jobs imported via Holland.
No not easily unless the retailer who sold it to you had any info on its background.

I saw the same model at a local shop.
I'm also wondering about the colour and the logo placement of the piano as it's different from the rest of Yamaha U1s.
