monington and weston

Post by stupotman »

Can anybody tell me anymore about the make monington and weston. I am going to view a second hand upright piano. At this point I have no further information, but was just interested in finding out what I can before I go. Many thanks.

Middle-rung English pianos mostly from the first half of the 20th century.

Salient feature of many was the inclusion of two iron frames with the wrestplank and soundboard in between as the meat in the sandwich, and a ridiculously high tension scale. This leads to their wrestplanks being prone to self-destruction and the inability to hold tune. Even intact examples are rarely comfortable at concert pitch. 6-octave models especially prone.

Take a tuner along with you.

Well, I got to Grade V on one! Depends how it's been looked after and what level you want it for. If it's been tuned recently, ask for the tuner's number and ask their opinion. If it's me, don't ring while Coronation Street's on...
