Opinions on Yamaha G3 Grand 6'

Post by ryder »

Any folks here who own this thing? Or anyone who have played on this particular model? How does the Yamaha G3 compare to the new C-series?

Any advice would be most appreciated.

I own a C3 and have played a G3 (though that was a good few years back). As I recall, I found the G3 produced the 'brittle' tone which I associate with institutional-style Yamahas of about 20 years ago, although as others here will point out, that may have been due to its preparation or the lack thereof.

The C3 seems to my ears to be a far more responsive instrument with a lighter touch and a broader tonal range. Certainly I'd never go back to a G3. I wouldn't go back to flares or sideburns either. Space hoppers, you say? Well now, that's a different story altogether.

Openwood,

THanks for your reply!! THis is the first time I've got a positive response and whatmore a previous owner of the Yamaha G3 and now C3.

Nevertheless, the answer was not what I had expected since I was considering to buy the used G3, and the price is quite cheap. The C3 is waaay too expensive brand new for my budget.

Anyway I appreciate your response.

By the way, do you happen to have any previous experience with a Kawai upright before? I currently own the Kawai US-50 which was supposed to be Kawai's top three uprights in their time. I've posted a thread some time back but got very poor response on that one.

I felt the touch was heavy on the Kawai and that's the reason I was considering the Yamaha Grand. Prior to purchasing the Kawai US-50, I've auditioned the Yamaha U5, and to my ears they sounded pretty much similiar but I've got the Kawai due to the better build.

If you have not owned any Kawai uprights before, don't bother responding. I just want to make sure the Yamaha G3 would be much better than my Kawai US-50. Since you've mentioned the C3 is a much better unit than the G3, I am more hesitant now. Anyway, since most definitely I cannot afford the brand new C3, the used G3 is still a prospect buy, provided the condition is mint.

Ryder - I can only speak from my experience. See what the other members on the forum have to say, bearing in mind that it would be difficult to think of a more subjective topic than types of piano!

When all is said and done the best piano in the universe is the one that makes the sound YOU want - sod what anyone else thinks.
