I would love to hear from anyone who may have any details about my newly acquired Spencer of London (Schubach) upright piano, serial number 27673.

Spencer or Schubach?

Which is it? John Spencer or Schubach? I can't imagine both names being on it, unless it was an old Spencer and someone stuck Schubach on the front. 27673 suggests 1896.

SPENCER OF LONDON (SCHUBACH) UPRIGHT PIANO
Post by Julie Ormerod »
Well, what can I add? I can only say that the little brass plaque inside says "SPENCER No. 27673 PATENT" then just above the key cover the gold letters say "SCHUBACH". The piano is possibly even older than I originally thought, it's no wonder it's looking a bit tired.

The Spencer serial number would be imprinted in the vertical wooden surface inside the top, at the righthand end, with a model number or letter below it. Brass plaques are not usual, and this may be a patent number. If you can email photos to me, that may help, but it is probably a Spencer with the Schubach name added later. Have a look at the Names page at http://www.pianogen.org
The Numbers page at pianogen.org includes the following entry...
1936 Schubach #7700
This is a definite date, maker unknown.
