Unless we get a posthumous visit from the late Arthur Askey, please can we set the joining parameters to reject anybody who attempts to join this forum whose name ends in 'asky'?

They all appear to be spammers.

I've never seen such prolific spamming like this, Pianos for sales page has half a dozen or so items which are plainly nothing to do with this forum...
Surely there must be filters to rid us of these wretched people...

Yes, the spam is highly irritating - see earlier discussion threads. I've just deleted the posts from 'g_gold' - at least they weren't porn links this time. I try to get online and weed out spam at least once a day - maybe some more people would be willing to become moderators? If we can't stop them joining (see earlier thread again) at least we can have a decent number of us to get rid of the stuff as soon as possible.

PS: Is there a way of deleting multiple posts? It took me quite a time to get rid of all that g_gold stuff!

The moderator situation is always going to be tricky, getting cover so the board can be checked regularly...Maybe some of the regulars who have been here a long time might willing, it just depends on how much time they can commit...

I used to moderate another forum awhile back and I am sure we had filters to keep this problem at bay, maybe the owner of this site would consider investigating the options available, if nothing else it would keep the pornsters out...

Thanks for the clean up openwood, I wasn't in the market for an IPod and I doubt this would be the first place that a person would come looking for one.

I hope you mean “pianos wanted" and not for sale

The problem with our forum it has been made very search engine friendly and picks up PR form Goggle which is what we wanted. However, so do the spammers and they will post links hoping to pick up on the same PR

We have stopped the robots but you can stop the subhumans from posting you can report them, that is futile in most cases. Filters work on keywords which we do have in place. The trick is to not let to much spam on at once as it then encourages others.

I missed my 6.30 clean up this morning thanks to Openwood normality is restored Most of it comes for the US, USSR, Norway and the Far East. The worst ISP for doing nothing is the ones in the US for spammers and copyright infringement

I don’t know how many moderator’s piano world has, but you don’t see much spam on there. Pianoshop has closed his forum again he did get a lot of spam some of the none piano forums I am on get it as well but they tend to have about 10 moderator’s for each section.

I am quite happy for regulars to be a moderators

look at their profile -list all post form them, then right click on the titles, select open in a new window, delete thenclose window go to next in list.

or

if they have posted a lot of new post in once section say "pianos" go to that section, scroll down to "You can moderate this forum" click on it, then tick the boxes of the post you want to delete, scroll down and click on delete

Hi Barrie,

I think you and the other mods have a thankless task, I know only too well the hassle involved. On the board I used to (note past tense) moderate not only did we have to contend with the occaisional spammer but the insane people and the rows that broke out..it was like handling children in a squabble...then the endless e-mails, one after another, I swear it defied imagination.

Personally I don't think its too bad here but I haven't been here very long, so what do I know  and I say this with the greatest respect but I wouldn't moderate another board for all the Tea in China or Guangdong for that matter...

I hope my earlier comments were not taken as criticism that was not the spirit they were written with...quite the reverse

Cheers

Not at all

comments and criticism are always welcome, diplomatically put or not if we did not get them we would not improve the site

Some sites get new members to read and type a randomly generated security code - bots can't do this so it's a good way of keeping them out. Can we do that?

That's been in place for over a year + we also have

Are you human? yes / no the default is no if they don't change this to yes then they are rejected

but some bots by spoofing IP bypass this and use their own form to submit this is why we have lots of new members but no post some do send PM to pianos wanted

then the is the 3rd line of defence they have to activate their account from the email they get

by this time we have their IP address and email address but its getting the ISPs to do something unless you are large corporation they tend to ignore you.

Spamming

How can ANYONE - criminal or otherwise - tolerate such a catastrophic collapse in THEMSELVES as to persist in this utterly worthless, pointless, brain-dead activity?

Some say that about train spotting  but they are not bugging anyone when they do it.
