Frederick Lindsey

Post by Ruj360 »

I am trying to get information on a piano I have just received. It is a birdcage upright from the UK circa 1875. The only mark I can find is on the underside ot the lid - Frederick Lindsey, 2 Ellington St, London N. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

The address suggests that it is between the 1850s and 1910s, overdamper actions were still used fifty years ago. We have no record of Lindsey in the late 1800s, but it is important to remember that even a century ago, there were tiny little cottage industries producing pianos from sheds in their back gardens. Unless they advertised, or were listed in directories, we cannot find them by active research. In 1892, there were no piano firms, or firms named Lindsey, in Ellington Street. The only Frederick Lindsey listed in business in London was a milliner. Have a look at the animated pictures at pianogen.org and see if these give any clues to date.
