German Pianos

Post by Geostil »

Hello!

I would like to know if Zimmermann and Hoffmann pianos are
a good selection. They are Bechsteins second line pianos.
I am interested in Zimmmermann Z-2 and Hoffmann W-128.

Thank you! :D

Zimmermanns are indeed German, are excellent pianos and very good value.

W.Hoffmann are currently one of Bechstein's budget lines made in the Czech Republic, although for how long they'll be made there is anybody's guess now they've bought Bohemia. They're really not as good.

So, as Zimmermann pianos are good, should I buy a Yamaha U3S or a Zimmermann Z2? I think the Z2 suits better to me as it is mellower than the Yamaha. Is there any problem with it? I have heard that pianos made in East Germany are junk. Is this true?

Thank you :!: :!: :!:

East Germany was a Communist state famous for rubbish pianos, lousy cars and secret police called the Stasi. In that order.

In spite of the fact that there's an inexplicable Nostalgia ("Ostalgia") for it amongst former residents, it was generally not considered to have been a Good Thing.
It ceased to exist in 1989. The event was heralded by the destruction of the Berlin Wall, thousands of Poles flogging shagged-out Mercedes Benz, Opel and VW cars and Olympus cameras to fleeing occupants of overloaded Wartburgs and Trabants, who were taking pictures on crude Prakticas and a big concert at the Potsdamer Platz . Beethoven's Choral Symphony was performed by the Berlin Phil with the word "Freude" replaced by "Freiheit" .It was all quite dramatic, surprised you missed it. It was even on Telly over here.

Yes, you're right. Zimmermanns were once East German, and all East German pianos were junk. A new Zimmermann is superb, and no longer East German, as such!

Make sure you don't buy an old one by mistake, they're distinguished by the wording "VEB Piano-Union Luckenwalde" on them somewhere; they look awful, are built badly; and oh yes, they sound like a donkey piddling on hot coals.

You'll be fine with a new Zimmermann, but a U3S is arguably just as good. Play both, and buy the one you prefer. Buy the *Actual one you try* not one "just like it".

Best wishes!
