Bluthner 6-footer for sale

Post by Openwood »

Anyone know anything about this one:

I could just about stretch to 5k on a decent restored 6-footer without getting a loan. I'd love to get a C3 (ok I'd love to get a Steinway B but meanwhile back on planet reality) but after transportation costs (first floor) I'm looking at at least 10k and that's from Mr. Lowest-Price-in-the-Galaxy-Venables. Can't stretch to that right now

I thought this Bluthner looked interesting - I'd have to change those freakin' fat legs but apart from that it might be worth a look? Anyone in that neck of the woods? I'd be happy to pay someone to do an intial check for me. Being stuck in the Channel Islands is so rubbish. Apart from the better weather. And the tax. And the lack of crime. And the proximity to France. And the fantastic seafood. And the beaches.

If it's sound it looks to be a fair price, but it certainly doesn't deserve to have the legs changed! If you remove original features, no matter how hideous they appear to yourself, you reduce the appeal to the next buyer. Originality is where it's at these days; gone are the unenlightened days of fitting square tapers to round legged grands and flush top doors to panelled uprights, you Philistine! Besides, they're elegant, and you'd get used to them.

I would however, be suspicious of a U-Sprayed frame in Fingermark Gold, and Bechstein Blue felt where should be dark Blüthner Blue. All signs of a lacklustre or careless restoration.

Well spotted, PG!

Those legs, oh dear. Oh deary dear. Probably the biggest mistake Germany ever made.

Oh, hang on...
