Görs and Kallmann 62662

Post by Openwood »

Görs and Kallmann, Berlin - Serial number 62662

I saved this baby grand from being dumped in a skip after a tip-off by my local tuner. It had been left in an unheated house for two years (the piano, not the tuner, you understand) so the action is sticking all over the place but my tuner reckons he can bring it back to good order after a couple of days work. The action, felts etc appear to be in reasonable condition and it's still almost at 440.

The tuner has dated it to 1924 and I reckon it's had some attention since then as there is very little wear on the hammers and it looks to have been French Polished not so long ago (the tuner, not the piano).

Anyone know anything about the manufacturer?

They scrub up very nicely the piano that is not the tuner
I would say their 1930’s pianos were better than Schimmels efforts of around 1930

I have restored a few Görs and Kallmann 6’ grands all turned out nice

I make the age for 62662 c1925 but what’s a year

I've been advised that it could do with a new set of hammers and if it had these I could sell it on for up to £4000. How much would a new set of good quality hammers cost?

About 400quid plus fitting and regulation... So bank on a grand.

I doubt that the valuation is correct though. Sounds like you're being 'buttered-up' to give someone the job. A dealer may well be able to get that kind of money with delivery, fancy showroom and warranty, but a private punter? Not likely. 1k-1.5k tops.

Don't believe me? Phone a few dealers and ask them how much they'd offer. Not a 'valuation' but an offer.

Hard cash.

The estimate of 3.5k was from a professional pianist who played it yesterday. I was thinking of selling it and putting the cash towards a new C3 but if it's only worth 1.5k I might as well shell-out for new hammers and keep it as a basic second instrument for teaching. It only cost me a hundred quid to save it from a skip so I don't mind investing up to a grand on keeping it ship shape. I'll have to get a loan for the Yamaha whatever I do, so I might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb...

Good one!

Sounds like you have a decent little piano for next to nowt.

Great value if you treat it as an instrument rather than a cash-cow. Could be a good part-exchange towards a C3 though. Dealers are known to offer more as a part exchange if it means they get a sale.
