Without sounding too much like Terry Jones, I don't like Spam.

Is there anybody about who cares to remove it please?

Quite right! Is someone away on holiday or something?
It needs removing asap, I am not reccomending this site to customers at present as it reflects very badly.
Get rid or the problem will grow out of all proportion, give these people an inch... it really is no jokong matter and does need soting or the site could end up un-usable.

I guess someone is on their hols, but surely a 'caretaker' could be appointed to hold the fort? It does make it impossible to recommend the site to other people. I've mentioned it to various people as a good place to get piano information but that will have to stop if the spam continues. Sorry. :(

The digital forum is already spammed up. I guess new login questions are needed; eg what is your favorite piano make. That might get rid of the trash... Some filter is needed.

Presumably the problem is in the system automatically accepting new registrations. I know other forums where all new registrations need to be approved by a moderator, so maybe this is the way forward?

Both Chris and I have been away, I think most of it has been fried but it is a pain we get a lot because the forum has quite a high PR in Google and you only need to relax for one day.

They have to give a real, email address which is verified this stops the robots. However, they who have nothing better to do use an anonymizer to hide behind and you can set up a temp email address in no time

When we changed over to verified emails that cut the spam out a lot, manly from the robots. Real posts dropped by quite a bit as well, having to wait for approval will put more users off

More moderators is the way forward. In sep I will be away for 21 days trying out some grass skirts.

I'll be around in September if you need temporary moderation assistance (sounds like an ad for Viagra - see, that's what happens when I read too much spam).

I haven't the faintest idea what it entails but I'm happy to obey orders, meine fuhrer.

PS - the grammatically deficient thread about nice wet holes is still there. Kinda stands out from the crowd....

Its not rocket science you get a few extra buttons showing on post. You also have a moderator’s panel. The button are edit, delete and ip the ip gives you the ip of the poster in the panel you can move, split lock and delete on mass

Manly it’s just deleting and moving the odd pots to the correct section. To date we have had only one person complain about aggressive post, which was in the teacher section and quite a wile ago

PM me if you are still interested or anyone else

The obscene publications act comes to mind or King George III's 1787 Royal Proclamation 'For the Encouragement of Piety and Virtue including the suppression of all 'loose and licentious Print

they don't get more loose than a grass skirt

They are robots if you notice they never post more than 12 post at a time as the flood ban kicks in I have now blocked the two main culprits IP address but I don’t like blocking ip address as it can stop real users in that region

I have put the domains that they keep posting in the bad word list

Sadly we have had two complaints from concerned parents who were viewing when some of the stuff was up there. Reporting these guys to their ISP is now a waste of time for a lot of far east ISPs

I did my inaugral 'weeding' session this afternoon - I must say that there was a hell of a lot of it. Is there no way in which membership applications can be kept in a 'holding bay' until Barrie's satisfied that they're genuine?

I think that would be a great idea - it's a real shame that this keeps happening. How about a few piano questions before membership is confirmed?

Yes I can put them on hold till I approve them, then I have to go into the CP dig out their email address, interrogate them by email, then approve them. For our overseas visitors that could translate into 24 hours before they are approved We are looking at 20 to 30 people a day who register and that is this time of year, it gets even more in Nov and Dec. Only 4.2 new users post to the forum, quite a few PM or email Bill or me and quite a few PM or email the Wanted section. The rest are just time wasters

That is a lot of work and time

I take your point, Barrie. It's just a pity that so much of it has started appearing because ultimately it's going to stop people using the site, which would be sad. It's clearly a much appreciated forum.

We have had this problem before; if some spam gets on the site and not removed others see it they then think its game on. This time two of them were using a program to submit in blocks of four new users and up to 12 posts each every six hours or so. They have been blocked; we just seem to be getting the odd ones in the middle of the knight from the USA.

Why they do it? In some cases just spite or they are not all there, but with some it’s all to do with PR Page Rank. This forum is PR6 also it is very Search Engine Friendly and anyone who is trying to improve there PR will see that and try to use some of it by getting back links from the site

I am going to put some extra fields in which should by most I am going to put some extra fields in which should upset most robots without making it to hard for new and existing users

Spam

Post by Bill Kibby »

As I have pointed out before, although it's not my job, I do delete spam frequently, but sometimes I have a life instead. Barrie probably has days when he likes to get on with some piano work, or even have a day off. I have just been out scouting for piano history, and picking up an antique piano for our proposed museum. Isn't is sad that people have nothing better to do than pester those of us who are trying to do something useful! As for technological solutions I dunno nuffink!

It is a shame indeed and your work does not go unnoticed, The site is fantastic and by far the best of its kind.
Tell us more of the proposed museum. Are you looking for exhibits?
By the way, I heard you have a collection of stuff found in pianos. What are your most interesting finds?

Museum

Post by Bill Kibby »

We are a bit superstitious about "buying the pram before we have the baby", but negotiations are in progress for a museum space for our collection of piano history, with some antique pianos for window dressing, and having gone into great detail about layout of displays in recent months, I begin to realise just what 44 years' collecting has produced, and am quite impatient to see it all laid out in one place, in a way that it has never been before. I don't have much of a collection of objects found in pianos, they tend to be quite small of course, but I will publish an amusing list later.
