It's an intriguing enquiry, but how would anyone know? Even if the makers' original archives were available, they wouldn't trace the life history of the pianos after they left the factory - no-one can. You would need navy records for that. Press www and then press Archives.

I can arrange for a researcher to check the original Erard archives for a fee, but they would probably just show that some pianos were sent to an american dealer. If his records were available, (which is unlikely) they would probably show that he sold some to the Navy. Their records probably DO exist somewhere, and might show me all sorts of interesting things about pianos, if only I could see them. They might say which pianos went to which ship, when, and how much they cost.

I'm new here, first time posting...HELLO everyone!

I have been on and off researching a specific Erard and just happened to stumble into this forum with such a resent entry on it!

I have an 1828 maybe 1829 upright Erard. The serial number is 1777 (Paris France) It has the cherry scrolling in front and I believe the rest to be mahogany. I know nothing else. It needs tuning, but other than that in wonderful condition. I have had some local experts in to look at it and they too were unable to find the exact one.

If anyone could shed any light or direct me to where I may find further information I would greatly appreciate it! I would like to know it's value if at all possible.

Looking at your enquiry again, how did you arrive at the date? Is it just based on numbers? It would be interesting to see photos, espacially interior details, to try to decide if it realy is that early.

I am so sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I had a death in the family and things have been moving in slow motion for me.

I'm intrigued by this number, are you sure about it being four digits? Are there any other numbers inside? The published dates of Erard numbers are often wrong, and no reliable date is available for this number.
