Thomas Tomkison Piano

Post by Philip Richards »

We have a piano which has been in the family for 38 years. We have no prior history other than it was bought along with an old Rectory in Hinton Blewitt, Somerset. The piano measures 29.5" by 69" the number (front inside left) is 10. 120. The address is Dean Street (no number) can you give me an idea of age and value ?

There are great problems with the dates which some people state as fact for Tomkison pianos, they don't run in any sensible order, and many claims are wrong. Have a look at pianogen.org and perhaps you could email some photos to me? Unfortunately, the number in Dean Street is not usually shown on the piano, and that would be a useful clue!

Are you sure the number is 10. 120 ? Not 10120?

Thank you for a very quick response. The number is definately 10 . 120 We are waiting for a carpet to be fitted and the piano at the moment is not really photographable but will be when carpet laid !!! The only other interesting feature is a signiture written in Script in ink on the inside of the piano must have been done during manufacture as there is no access to the location now. The signiture is Landan definately a's not o's. The piano is not separately insured should it be do you think ? Philip

The answer to the insurance question lies in valuation, which need an on-the-spot inspection. Have a look at the Valuation link at pianogen.org

I used to love Scarborough, and we hope to get back up there some time for a visit, so perhaps we might get to see the Tomkison? Landan would probably be an employee of Tomkison, I haven't come across him.

Thanks again for your response. Make contact if you are in the area. Of coure like all Seaside places Scarborough has seen changes over the years. Some good some bad. They still have the Sea Battle twice a week in Peasholm Park. My Grandma used to take me when I was a boy. Moved here in 1987. Check Scarborough News for Whats On. Kind Regards Philip
