Young Chang or Yamaha?

Post by Momspc »

My daughter is going to college for music and we need to upgrade our piano. We looked at a 1989 Young Chang G157. It look's great but hasn't been played or tuned in 6 years. The touch seemed stiff. We were told that Young Chang pianos had a sought after touch. The touch and tone is important to us. We were also considering a Yamaha U1 but do not like the boxy look. Should we stay away from the Young Chang and just look for a Yamaha baby grand? This one might be a very good buy because the people have to move soon. Any suggestions?

Young Chang pianos are not bad if the piano has not been tuning in 6 years it will take a few tunings to get it back in to shape could be as many as 6 depending how well it was looked after before the 6 years neglect As to the touch a lot can be done with a grand and the stiff touch could be because it has not been played much – was the room damp.

The grand action will if regulated correct out perform an upright piano if your daughter likes the tone of the Young Chang I would go for that one rather then the U1. However, if would be advisable to get a good tuner who is happy at regulating grands to give the pianos the ones over – it could be that the action need re-centreng that depending where you are can be expensive. A full re-regulating can be around 150 to 300 pounds again depending were you live

Thanks for the quick reply. We are going to have a tuner and technician look at it before we buy it. It probably was damp because the room faced a big lake. We think we can get it for $4500 US dollars and a new Yamaha that size is out of our price range at $13,000.
