I use a digital gauge for finding the thickness of felts. It changes when moved, what is a better gauge to use for accuracy?

At the Royal Gorge felt factory they use to use a micrometer but with two 4” disks on them this was so they could get a better measurement on soft felts, It was something out of a mediaeval torcher chamber. You could glue 2 plastic disk on and then zero the micrometer.

Like you I use a digital micrometer some of the supply houses give you felt gauges but they are just slots cut into a ruler not very accurate

Besides a pair of anvils, an actual felt gauge has a spring to ensure a consistent pressure when measuring thickness. Obviously this would be hard to replicate purely by feel.
