Refinishing the piano cabinet

Post by mytreasure »

I have a knight K10 about 1962-3 in teak. I am looking to find out how to restore the piano finish. Overall the piano is dull and lacks luster, there are one or two small white paint marks and a few little scratches.

The top is the worst affected area and has two chips out of the wood near the far edge, I know these will need some wood filler of some kind, but what colour??

Can I sand the cabinet down and just feed the wood will some bees wax polish/oil, like you would a wood floor. Or do I need to apply some kind of wood stain.

The piano has come from a school and is in excellent working order apart from the case that as I say on the whole just looks dull.

If anyone has any advice on how to restore its sheen I would be very greatful!!!

Many thanks

Both refinishing and touch-up are really large topics for a forum. I suggest you get a a good book on the subject. Filling in gouges and scratches is best done with stick shellac burned-in, for instance, lessons for which will not be given here.
That said, the finish is probably lacquer which can be brightened up by a very fine abrasive polish.

You need to establish the type of finish in question before attemping anything.
Spray?
Unlikely to be French Polish from 1962.
Could try some non silicon wax.
