Green & Marsh
Hi all, I am located in Ontario Canada, and was fortunate enough to purchase a beautiful Green and Marsh Ltd, Bath, Bristol, and Swindon piano from and english couple who brought it with them when they moved. I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything about it. The numbers on the inside of the piano are: E3 02 or possibly Z3 02. I have pics I could send, but I don't know how to attach them to this post. Thanks!
Deb

They began around 1890 in the city of Bath, and were in Bristol & Swindon by 1911, but seem to have reverted to the Bath shop by the twenties. However, we have no record of them being "Ltd." until the thirties. Numbers like this are not serial numbers, and anyway, no dates are published for Green & Marsh numbers. See the Numbers link at pianogen.org
We don't even know if they made the pianos, they probably bought them in from wholesalers. See the 'Datemarks' and 'Piano names' links at pianogen.org
You could email the photos to me.

I must apologise for the fact that my reply to "Avarath" seems to have disappeared. No original archives survive for most piano names, and we cannot trace most individual pianos, all we can do is look at the instrument and see what can be learned from it. See the Reports link at pianogen.org
My previous brief comments about the firm are as much as I can give without seeing the piano, Swindon seems to suggest a date before the twenties, but I would be pleased to see photos if you email them to me. Have a look at the Datemarks link at pianogen.org
