Steinway - New York or Hamburg?

Post by Openwood »

Hang on a minute; what's the difference between a Steinway piano made in Hamburg and one made in New York? Looking at the Steinway website I notice that they add numbers to the model letters to show that an instrument has been made in one place or another, so they clearly think the difference is worth noting, but what IS the difference?

Looking around online it seems that most people prefer the pianos built in Hamburg - I'd be interested to know what it's all about!

Different shape, different hammers, different rim construction on grands, different wrestplanks, crappy additions to the upright range, 'confused' model L in the grand range which isn't worth bothering with.

A good US Steinway can be a very nice piano indeed and a bargain if you're not worried about investment potential. Since the bulk of Hamburg Steinway speculators are from the US, the value of a US one in Europe is very much lower than a Hamburg one, because you won't find Americans bidding on it.
