Help with our Hopkinson Heirloom

Post by Paul Steer »

Hi, We have a Hopkinson Baby Grand. It belonged to my Grandfather "the professor" of Deptford, London. He worked at the docks during the day and then taught piano at night .It has a plate No 38522 marked supplied by Harrods of London I think it may have been purchased around the 1920's ? Both my daughers have learnt to play on it......but it is sadly very worn. The black laquering is virtually worn out and faded from the sun. It seems to play OK and the tuners said its innards were in good condition. What sort of money is it worth ? and how much would it cost to have the finish restored? If anybody could give me advice on the most cost effective method of restoring it I would be very grateful....It is a treasured family heirloom and we would love to improve its appearence , if funds will allow

With out seeing the piano it is difficult to say

On the finish... up-north you tend to look at £175.00 per foot for a strip and hand polish
:piano;

Hopkinson baby Grand/Hohner

Post by Paul Steer »

Hi Barrie,
Wow I did not expect an answer so quick. Sorry if I sound clueless ...but my trade was the leather trade & we work in square feet! I presume we are talking the length of the piano? If you could give me the top & Btm Book prices ( I think it needs a complete case refurb) Can you tell me the year of manufacture from the serial number. I also have been asked to try and sell a Hohner baby grand for a customer of mine...It looks in excellent condition.....can you give me a ball park figure...I put 4k in your pianos for sale site....only cause it would not accept ...offers..... Cheers.....what a great site It has re-ignited my interest in our piano!

You can not give an estimate for a job like that, with out seeing it. There is damage to the case, damage to the veneer and what is on there now

Yes I can give you a date for the serial number

The 6’ and 7’ Horner Grand’s are not bad at all I have 2 on my round both about 10 years old one has been worked very hard and is bearing up well BTW photos help to sell pianos
