boardman&gray 5'1" grang piano

Yes I have a 5'1"boardman&gray grand piano well it belongs to my wife.she has owned it for about 5years. and has loved playing it. the action works very well has been adjusted regulated and voiced,but the strings are starting to break. a piano tec said it would cost more to rebuild it then it would be worst. i was wondering if Idid the work my self if it would be worst doing. i helped an old gentleman rebuild a 1902 kimball upright I am petty good with tools and have bought some books on rebuilding pianos. I have a good place to do the work and alot of time do you think it would be possible for me to do the work or is it to big of undertakeing. Thanks Jim

Action work and regulation can be done to a reasonable level by a person who is practical minded and good with tools. However, stringing is different a poorly regulated piano will not kill you, but put the wrong strings on and pull it up to pitch you can get hurt.

You will have to find a company that will supply the strings bass and steels also new tuning pins, and then you will have to make patterns for the bass strings and gauge the steels

I would asks the guy who came to give you an estimate if he would be your mentor you will need a tuner to pull it back up to pitch. Quite a few tuners will not pull piano up that have been restrung by others

Thanks Mr Heaton It puts my mind at easy to hear from some who thinks it possible for me to restring this piano i can do it i know about the strings and that you could get hurt or even killed buy a breaking string or something else. i will gauge all the steels and get the right size and make temeplates so to put everthing back in the right place. there is a piano wharehouse adout 50 miles of where i live i can get everthing that i need there. my wifes friend is a piano tuner and he will being the piano up to tune for her. thanks again Jim
