Yamaha U1/3/YUS reimport versus new W&L 122

Post by Diabolo »

Hi,

I am a beginner and want to buy a piano which will
also satisfy me in some years.

The Yamaha U1/U3/YUS have a quite good reputation. In the moment there are lot of them on the market which has been reimportet from Japan (used ones).

So i have i have the choice between such a U1/U3/YUS
(from the beginning to the mid 80's) and a brand new
Wendl & Lung 122.

Which one would you choose?

Regards,

Andreas

The W&L 122 is a great value piano, but a second-hand U1 is better, provided you get a good one. If you decide to go for the used Yamaha, get a technician not connected with the shop to check condition, and be guided by him. Of course, the first stage is to play all the pianos and decide which one you like the best.

All of the pianos in your list are capable of sounding very good, although the W&L should be a bit cheaper than the s/h Yam? If it isn't, the dealer's either charging strong money for it or the s/h Yamahas he has are very cheap, or very old. A fair price in the UK is around 2500 GBP. Where in the world are you ?

Hi,

First thanks a lot for input! I am located in germany.

Regarding the sound i would prefer the U1 when i am playing for example boogie woogie for the other stuff i would prefer the W&L (it has a warmer touch to my ears)

Prices: I have an offer of 1600 GBP for a 1982 YUS(UY1). The W&L would be around 2100 GBP new.

The W&L price sounds very good. I'm not familiar with the UY1 designation, although I'm familiar with the YUS. Is it badged as both?

I prefer standard U1s myself, rather than the odd model numbers of essentially identical pianos, but that does seem like a very fair price. Around trade price in fact.

The serial number begins with YUS. As mentioned it seems to be a model which was only sold in Japan.
