Challen & Brothers?

Post by joseygirl3333 »

My great grandmother left me this piano. I wrote all the information down on it and I was wondering if someone can help me out. i just want to know the history of it. here is what it says:

Challen & Brother
46 Oxford St London
Maker of HRH Prince Albert Victor of Wales

...then when you lift the lid to the keys it has a picture of different dimes and they say London 1862, Capetown 1877, Paris 1878, Melbourne 1881, London 1885, Edinburgh 1886. Thank you

The "dimes" are medals received at exhibitions by Challen, but I have never heard of the company being called "Challen & Brother". The latest medals shows us that the piano was made after the 1886 exhibition. (See pianogen.org) No archives survive to give us details of individual pianos.
