Help! has anyone heard of a make of piano, an upright called 'Crompton' or have any info on it.I believe it was purchased in South Wales, probably in Newport, Gwent around about 1934. my sister has recently died and despite trying we cannot move this piano. It is made in Walnut, has an iron frame and is very heavy. It has been willed to me, but I live in Yorkshire and the piano is in Herefordshire. Piano removers will move it, but for a price. We have been told that it is not worth anything as no one wants pianos these days. If we have it moved by a house clearance company, they have said it will cost £200 and will be broken up. We would like to know if it is worth trying to save. many thanks

Margy.

It's probably a stencil name - one applied randomly to mass-produced pianos shipped out to various dealers. I can't find mention of them in my piano atlas, but Bill on the History page would be your best bet. What about giving it to a local old folks' home or church or youth club if you don't want it yourself?

There was a tuner named John Crompton in London around the 1890s, and it was quite common for tuners to put their names onto pianos. I certainly wouldn't pay anyone two hundred pounds to remove it, try freecycle.com.
