Steinway Model L

Post by mnjbates »

Hi. I was just given my in-laws Steinway & Sons piano. It needs a little work and I'm still waiting to hear back from a local Steinway tech who was highly recommended to let me know just just what needs to be done to make the piano more playable. Anyway, I'm trying to solve a little mystery (at least a mystery to ME) and I was hoping that someone on this forum could help. The piano has a serial # that indicates that it is a 1907 grand (I got that info from Steinway's web site). Just above the serial number on the piano, it indicates that it is a Model L; however, I have read that Model L pianos were not produced by Steinway until 1923. Can anyone shed any light on this apparent contradiction? Thanks so much for any help that you can provide!

As I understand it, their Model 'O' was temporarily discontinued in 1923, and replaced by the Model 'L'. That doesn't mean the L didn't exist before.

The L was a New York only piano, and has once again been discontinued in favour of the O. Is the "L" cast in to the frame or is it a decal?
