Dear subscriber,
I have recently acquired an upright piano by John Brinstead & Sons London. It is in outstanding condition and I am interested to approximate its date of manufacture. The wood appears to be a slightly reddish colour and there is a number stamped onto the top edge of the side visible only when the top is lifted... 50620. I have visited the section where it deals with such information, but to my mind (and I am the uninitiated) its appearance doesn't indicate that it is that old. Maybe I'm wrong...can you help please?

Firstly, may I assume that this is actually BrinsMead? Are any exhibition medals mentioned on the piano? If so, please give the details. See

The name suggests that it is after 1862, and the number suggests about 1902, but many published dates of Brinsmead piano numbers are wrong, quite apart from the other pitfalls involved in dating a piano by its number. See

I have just acquired a John Brinsmead & Sons piano in a place I bought. While it is a beautiful piano I already have a baldwin baby grand that I love and fits better in my home. I have no idea what to ask for this piano. It plays fairly well, the case looks very nice. There is a number inside it 28503. I have NO IDEA what to ask for it. it appears to be a grand in size. Any help would be appreciated. I am in the US and the building it is in for sale so if I don't sell it soon it will go with the building. I am not looking to get rich just ask a fair to low price. I have no idea what you mean by a "grand in size", "Grand" is not about size, in spite of the French origin. The serial number suggests that the piano was made around 1885, and not 1872 as the published numbers say. Are there any exhibition medal dates listed on the piano?
