Wood, Small & Co.

Post by pattyrer »

Hi, hope you don't mind giving me a little info on my piano, if you can I would be grateful, it's a square by Wood, Small & Co., Edinburgh. It's in quite good condition and has been tuned and played up till recently. I love it but dont know anything about it and would love to as it is a family piece. thank you

It would be interesting to have photos for our files, if you could email some. Wood, Small & Co. were previously known as Wood & Small, and were based in Edinburgh, but scottish firms found it difficult to compete with London's reputation, and some had offices in London for this reason. Some of these pianos are from the 1820s, others are described as "early victorian".

1819 Wood, Small & Co. are not listed in the Post Office London Directory.
Circa 1824 Wood, Small & Co., Instrument Maker to His Majesty, Edinburgh. Also an address in London, 27 Little Britain.

Tony Curtis' book "Antiques and their values" has a sketch of a Wood, Small & Co. "early victorian" square piano.
