Challen Evans

Post by Kit Rivers »

Hello, I am a new poster and I live in NZ. I have a piano in the UK, at my parents house, and I want to bring it out here, mainly because I love it.
However before committing so much money I just wondered it anyone knew anything about this model. I cannot find any information aboutit.

Basically it is an Evans Miniature upright grand piano, made either by or on behalf of Challen. BUT it is black with either japanese or chinese figures all over it. It has a matching stool. When shut it is rather like a bureau. Whilst I have seen cabinets etc made with this finish, never a piano.

Family tradition says it was one of 6 made for some London exhibition but....?

I have no hope of getting the serial number..my mum is not up to crawling around the inards of pianos, but we do have the patent nos.
30826/1935 293/1936 724/1936.

Please can anyone help me with information about this piaon (soon to be a very well travelled piano!)

Thanks,

Kit.

You can safely forget the idea that only 6 were made, I've probably seen more than that! The Challen Evans Miniature Upright Grand Piano is a very pretentious name for a mass-produced small upright piano. Don't spend any money until you have a report from a tuner. It may well have decoration of a type only done on a limited number, we have no archives available to find out things like that.
