Covering backs of uprights

I wanted to make the free-standing modern upright piano in my school music room less loud and was advised to cover the back with felt. In the event I found some of that material the boy racers use to cover speakers in cars. It's pretty thick (as indeed am I) but it seems to do the job. Is there anything out there more effective?

If you want to make the piano make less noise then filling the back between the back posts with poysterine and then covering the whole back with a thick sheet will do the job. Most of the sound will come toward the pianist but some sound will be absorbed. Another idea is to have a celest kit fitted (third pedal on newish pianos)as this will nearly half the volume when opperated. A technician will need to fit this,it ain't cheap (under Ł180 + fitting) but means you can push a lever and hey! a quiet piano.
