steinway model z

Post by claude »

i got a used steinway model Z made in 1961.it is in very good condition. however it does have a problem: some notes, 3 to be precise, keep sounding for some tme after they have been played. i called a tuner and he says the dampers are ok and that the problem is due to echo from to the soundboard. does anyone have a an answer and a possible solution? thank you very much for your attention.

Well that’s a new one on me I will have to remember that one.

Soundboards don’t echo only strings that are not damped. Is the problem at the treble bass break (where the steels change over to the copper strings ) Wen you put your finger on the string does it stop

Thanks for your advice, but I must tell you that the string still sounds after I apply pressure on it with my finger.

Either it's a weak damper spring on a *lower* string, or a damper(s) in the extreme bass is damping its string at a node point along the string's lenglth, enabling the section of the string below the damper to resonate sympathetically.

Try damping low strings with your hand and see if the problem disappears.......

That’s fine now hit one of the notes and with the palm of you hand place it on the lower bass strings just above the dampers then repeat the process along the base strings see if that kills the echo

You are right. Placing the hand on the lower strings solves the problem. Thank you very much.

Getting a decent technician (preferably not the one who suggested echo from the soundboard) to fit longer dampers may do the trick, otherwise live with it!
