Thing is because of the 'crook' in my finger it actually forms into the 'perfect' position for piano player - a beautifuly curved shape.

These were top teachers that forgot - as one hand was 'ok' and the other wasn't LOL

I think you just have to trust the teacher; he/she will be aware of any problems associated with the size of Emily's hands, and you can always ask that they find exercises that are manageable for her. I think if a child genuinely wants to learn then it will make an effort to read music. That's all very well to say - but when you have a child who you know expectionally well (ie your own LOL) but he can hardly manage to remember all his 'normal' shapes let alone crotchets, quavers, minim's etc. an...

I'm an organist 'by trade' but also learned the piano at school too and have taught it before but only to only children.
