Thanks to both replies. Serial number refers to 1938 -39 as you suggest, so now I just have to go and see it!

I'm going to take a look at a 6' Grotrian Steinweg that has come up for sale. I'm told its c.1945 and in very good condition, though not restored. Asking price is about ?6500.
