Must admit the name out me off buying one...I certainly have never come across it, but the name seems such a shame when the instrument itself seems to be very decent.

I have since discovered there's also a W102 and a few other numbers.

I was told it's very rare and the piano shop told me they will be able to sell it very easily if I didn't take it. It was almost like a threat!

How does it compare to the U1? Any information very much appreciated, thank you.

Cola pianos

At the piano shop, I also noticed a brand called 'cola'. It was a very nice piano, but has an unfortunate name. It also seemed very good value, one drawback being it's made in china. Would anyone know how well these pianos are made and whether it's worth buying one?

Just bought Yamaha W103, any information appreciated!

Hello A student just bought a walnut yamaha W103 which I was told is like a U1. I preferred the normal ebony yamaha U1 but my student liked the matt finish better. It cost a bit more than the U1, I just wonder whether we made the right decision? It's serial number 2 something, has been used quite a ...

Thanks for all your comments, looks like I'll go ahead with the fee raise. What's a reasonable raise to ask for? I don't think I'll be going with 50%, as tempting as that might be but more like 10% from the current rate. I'm already giving discounts on households with two or three students. I guess ...

Thanks for that Gill, much appreciated. I guess it's easy to say than do...If I was really upfront about the fee raise, I'm afraid of losing most of the students, or even if they agree to the raise, how it will affect the teacher-parent relationship. As I have only been teaching in London for a bit ...

Piano lesson fees for 2008

Hello I was wondering if you all thought it's reasonable to raise lessons fees for 2008? I have been teaching for 11 years, have a masters degree, and currently charge £25-28 per hour as a home visit teacher in London. When I visited the ISM site it recommends that teachers in London charge £24 and ...

Books for classical pianist wanting to learn improvisation

Are there any books geared towards classical pianists wanting to learn some jazz? I'm a very advanced classical pianist, licentiate and up, but somehow feel I'm missing out a big chunk of repertoire and joys of playing by not knowing how to improvise. During university I was taught some basics but n...

Thanks for both of your replies. I was told this 'smaller' version of U1 is in fact MC3, made in the mid 80s. I'm actually going to try out a U1 from 1982 today which apparently has a brighter tone than the kawai, somewhat similar to the MC. Although I like the kawai, I still have some reservations ...

Kawai NS-15 or Yamaha U1

I know this is an old topic, but I was hoping to enlist the help of some piano experts on this forum. I went to a piano shop today with a very limited budget of £1650-1700. Having failed to find a decent piano with my limited budget in the last month, this piano shop seemed to offer reasonable piano...
