Smelly stools can truly be a problem especially with an older piano. There is such a close connection between the infrastructure of the piano and the stool. For example if the piano has been tuned to a well-tempered scale (older)but the owner happens to prefer a more "even-tempered" (newer...

I would suggest that you let someone who is trained in doing the job do it!! It was your great grandma's piano and I assume it is a labour of love. There are plenty of things that you could do to the piano to make sure that a family member has been involved with it's restoration that doesn't involve...

Definitely get a tuner/piano technician to look at it as it is old enough to have structural problems ...and if none then it would be a lovely buy xx
