Re: Collard Grand
Hi Bill, Thanks for the replies and the link to your web page. Indeed it seems that Collard numbers are problematic. I was using the Atlas in an attempt to date that one but after reading through your page on Collard I would concur with your observation that the published info is far from accurate. ...

Collard Grand
I am having difficulty in determining the age of an older Collard in Vancouver, Canada and the technicians on this forum will be far more familiar with these instruments. There seems to be 2 serial numbers of significance. I have included a link to an online photo album below. The first number 11609...

Re: A Question about a 1911 Autopiano
There are 3 groups of Player Pianos; Regular, Expression and Reproducing. The fastest way to determine which is look at the rolls boxes to see what type the instrument plays or check the fall board for decal writing. Reproducing rolls were all marked with the unit they were cut on. More here; http:/...

Yes indeed. Burkat Shudi founded that company in 1728 and still in operation today.NewAge wrote: If it's what I think it means, I can think of one first rate company still in existence which is older than Bosendorfer.
Bosie opened 100 years later.

The tuning pins on the left side of each set of three locate into the front section of the block. Most likely the front of the block is fracturing laterally, left to right.

Re: Sun bleaching
Colour tinting to match boards can be tricky to accomplish. Usually one has to go slightly darker that the original colours to get everything to match well. For boards that have lightened it is important to see which part of the colour spectrum is missing. Most of the time it is reds and greens as t...

Re: Sun bleaching
Any colour subjected to sunlight or UV is stripped away; bleached out by the sunlight or indirect sunlight. This is ongoing even on cloudy days. Solid colours may take more time to lighten but eventually do so. One does not realize the black has faded until such time as a chip or repair that involve...

Re: Sun bleaching
UV strips all colours away eventually. Black is one of the most expensive to complete as solid colours show more imperfections. With wood grain finishes a lot of mistakes and imperfections can be hidden especially when using nitro finishes. The clear poly over the black colour will go cloudy when ex...

Hi Barry,
My apologies I did not notice this further posting. I have no idea if Chickering made a piano with the double plate. That would not be a surprise as Chickering was a company that often experimented with different designs.

Re: Room effect
I would recommend the larger instrument as that is a fairly large room with a lot of air space for an instrument to beat. A larger instrument will have more horsepower and this can be knocked down by voicing or fix the room if you need to. Rectangular rooms can exhibit what are commonly called room ...

Hello Kaj, Good to see you posting here. I had one of those uprights in my shop a few years ago. Good solid build and one other thing I noted besides the double plate assembly was the very slim profile of the instrument. This model did not protrude from the wall as much as the usual upright does. Th...

Colin is correct; Doherty was an early Canadian piano. As stated previously, any instrument for purchase should be checked over by a local technician of your choice for present mechanical condition and then your local market value. William Doherty 1840-1924. Doherty & Co. Est. 1868 as a distribu...

I had a Cramer here a while back with the six legs; it also had the pin stripe inlay in an almost Sheraton style cabinet. Quite possible to be yew on the inlay. Buy it with a view that you are going to have it restored in the future when it is restored you will have an exceptional piano for a fraction of the cost of a new one Barrie This is exactly what I did here when I found a 1979 Blüthner model 6 at an estate sale. This one has a Renner action instead ...

Interesting to note the instrument that is sixty-five years younger has 80% less warranty coverage. You might ask why this is so.

Traditionally the mahogany and walnut moldings are somewhat lighter then the hornbeam. At times it is difficult to determine which hammers to use especially if the originals have received heavy use. From my experience Abel gives a lot of felt weight to new sets of hammers especially in the extreme t...

Check with any of your local businesses who use the services of local technicians regularly such as your local universities, colleges, music schools, reputable piano dealerships or music instructors who teach piano.
