Thanks Pianoguy. Yes the heads had separated from the wood. I'm tempted to replace the hammerheads myself to save money-what do you think; also rebushing keys, again can this be done by a non-expert?

Is an older digital piano any good?
I think these digital pianos can be had fairly cheaply, with weighted keys etc, but as they are quite old I wonder if they are still a reasonable substitute for an upright, e.g. touch, tone, polyphony.
