restoring a 1909 Bluthner

I've just had a tuner review the piano and he is amazed at the excellent condition of the instrument. Some hammer and damper felts could be replaced, but the piano is in great condition... amazing for its age, actually. This is a relief! :D I'm back to the subject of refinishing the case only... Doe...

parts is parts?

The used spare parts business in pianos is fairly niche, I'd say. If one is needing to replace felts or strings or something, what's the use to replace with old used parts? This kind of work is usually done by a professional tuner/technician. The majority of the expense is more likely to be in the t...

locals?

In Bergen I am.

Is it fathomable that a near-100 year old Bluthner piano could not need a full restoration?

when to renovate?

I've got a 1910 Bluthner style 6 grand that I've been intending to refinish because the cabinet is a little shabby. The sound is good, I think. The instrument seems to be in good condition. It was apparently a piece of furniture (not played) in a reclusive's house, and after his passing the relative...

digital or the real thing

Pianos are a musical instrument, and I believe a good musical instrument will arouse your passions. Even a good drum will do it. You're supposed get excited when you hear a piano you like! Be careful, though, if you try ever more expensive pianos... as the price goes up, generally, you get into rich...

Thanks, Bill. I said it was 1955, but actually I cannot find the serial number or date. I'm guessing it got rubbed out in the renovation. The Renner action is dated 1955. Was Haegele a respected manufacturer? I know they were small. "too modern", eh? was there any problem in the latter yea...

Barrie. thanks. The dryness makes sense. I wasn't sure about the dampness. what humidity do you aim for... 50%?

What about temperature. could temperature at 40 deg F cause shrinkage and cracking.. or is there a recommended temperature range for keeping pianos?
thanks

Barrie, thanks. What is a polish reviver, exactly; and what scratch remover do you refer to?

Heard of Haegele?

I have found a brilliant sounding :D restored 1955 Haegele 125 upright in a shop. The owner says his grandmother always spoke well of Haegele pianos, along with Grotrian, Steinway, Boosendorfer and Bluthner. Although the piano was restored, the sound board is apparently original, as is the frame and...

What makes a sound board crack?

I have a 1909 Bluthner grand instrument in great musical shape. The case needs work. In considering my options for the finish work I might ship it off to a professional shop or do it myself in my garage. The shipping concerns me about risk of damage to the frame or soundboard... the dampness and coo...

how does one rejuvenate a French polish?

I have a 1909 Bluthner grand. The majority of the piano case work is in its original black French polish; not as shiny anymore, several scrapes but only two or three actually through the balck to light wood underneath. There is light damage (I think) on one panel over the keys. Its a large patch of ...
